Founded by Steve Langan in 2008, the Seven Doctors Project offers a variety of creative writing and poetry workshops to health care professionals. The project partnered with the Nebraska Writers Collective in 2013 to combine resources and extend the program to professionals in other fields who rarely have opportunities to tap into their creativity or participate in the arts.

Named after the seven physicians who participated in its inaugural session, the Seven Doctors Project gives working professionals the mentoring and accommodating environment they need to incorporate creative writing into their busy schedules. Small groups meet in the evening to receive feedback on their work from their peers and from some of the most talented writers in our community.

Sessions run for six to eight weeks, focusing on the creation of publishable pieces, though each participant is free to choose their own writing goals and work in any genre they choose. Some have gone on to write memoirs, while others have had novels and poetry collections published.

Program Highlights

Participants have made presentations at the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, the Examined Life Conference, the State University of New York-Upstate, and at University of Nebraska Medical Center Grand Rounds.

Group publications appear in the Hospital Drive anthology and the Empty Room Anthology.

Participants have been featured in the New York University Literature, Arts, & Medicine blog; Ploughshares; Annals of Internal Medicine; and the Omaha World-Herald.

Many participants have had work accepted for publication, including a multi-book contract and a major literary prize from Creative Nonfiction.

“I believe 7 Doctors Project gave me a venue to maintain perspective and experience the world through other work, the stories of others, and different perspectives. I think without this experience and venue, I would have joined my peers in sub-clinical depression.” -Jocelyn Wu

“I find that there can even be poetry when writing something as dull as a business letter.” -Stacey Coleman

“The 7 Doctors Project is an opportunity for writers of all levels, new or published, to have a sounding board to try out original ideas. It is a collective voice whose purpose is to encourage and enlighten the writer. 7 Doctors is a force for individual expression in whatever written format the writer chooses.” -Phyllis Dunne

“It’s a great way to meet other people interested in writing and reading who will be supportive and encouraging.” -Mandy Mowers
