The Nebraska Writers Collective needs a Core Teaching Artist, and needs your application by July 31, 2020 to be considered for this part-time position. The full job description follows:


Core Teaching Artist

Nebraska Writers Collective — Omaha, NE

8 hours / week (with more in the spring, fewer in other seasons)

$575 / month (August 15, 2020 - June 30, 2021)


Core Teaching Artist Job Summary

The Nebraska Writers Collective, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, seeks an energetic Core Teaching Artist to oversee Teaching Artists for our Louder Than a Bomb: Great Plains slam poetry program. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, someone who displays excellent classroom management skills, delivers kind and actionable feedback, and communicates efficiently and effectively with staff members, community partners, and teacher sponsors at various school sites. Exceptional candidates will have previous classroom and/or management experience, a passion for creative writing, and an ability to work well with both young people and adults. Strong written and verbal communication skills required.


Core Teaching Artist Responsibilities and Duties

  • Regularly visit school sites for the Louder Than a Bomb: Great Plains youth slam poetry program to assess Teaching Artists and provide substitution and/or classroom assistance as needed
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings with the Program Manager to review school assignments, plan internal and external events, and coordinate support throughout the Louder Than a Bomb: Great Plains network
  • Provide transportation to school visits, public workshops and readings for four (4) touring artists throughout the 2020-2021 school year
  • Attend four (4) sessions of the monthly youth slam poetry event Lettuce Turnip the Beet (LTTB)
  • Coordinate one (1) session of LTTB by arranging judges, host(s), and bout managers
  • Attend and coordinate all Omaha sessions (7 are estimated) and possibly a Lincoln or out-of-state date of Louder Than a Bomb: Great Plains festival (Spring 2021). 
  • Advertise upcoming events from the Nebraska Writers Collective and Louder Than a Bomb: Great Plains on personal social media channels 
  • Collaborate with community partners such as the Bluebarn, Opera Omaha, Omaha Public Library, and B Side of Benson Theater for various events and workshops throughout the 2020-2021 slam poetry season


Core Teaching Artist Qualifications and Skills

  • Commitment to social justice, equity, and fairness
  • Self-starter with a willingness to work collaboratively 
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple platforms with varied audiences, including checking and responding to email communications on NWC tasks and responsibilities promptly
  • Effective time management; ability to manage multiple deadlines at once
  • Experience with classroom education, youth, and/or management preferred but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, English, Education, Journalism, Creative Writing, or other relevant field preferred but not required
